If you want a late Sunday breakfast, you may want to request that it be cooked now, otherwise you get dried-up leftover food. Yuck. I won't be back!
Best Newfoundland food in the area. I have never been disappointed there. My Mom came for a visit and just loved the salmon - still raving about it years later.
I & a Friend ate dinner at velma's, on holiday back in Sept. 2008. She had the Cod Au Gratin & I the Scallops. Excellent, Beautifly prepared & a Good value! I'd recommend Her to anyone
Was at velma's today for Lunch, Both of us had their Luncheon Special, Beef Stew,,,,,Excellent! Highly recommend to anyone!
We were a party of 8 and everything was so good, the Fish & Chips was the best I ever had in the City. The hot beef and Club sandwiches are made with homemade bread, and the wings were awesome!! Will be back for sure next time I visit St. John's.
I ate at Velma's last summer while in town for the Avril Lavine Concert, my kids were amazed at the Food, the portions were quite large and the food was exquisite!! Made me feel proud that tourists would definately not be able to find fault with such a fine establishment! The staff was super friendly , the atmosphere was fantastic but the Food was definately the highlight!!! Home fries, homemade fresh bread, what more could you ask for? I took pictures and wish there was a spot to post them as it would be all the advertisement needed!
Just ate there. Service, Food and price were A1!!! Highly reccomend!!!
Well, it's Good Friday, Apr 22, 2011 and I had to drop in to Velma's Place, simply because my name is Velma just wanted coffee but had a traditional Newfoundland cod something or other (not cakes too much so took away more than I ate. The staff were so friendly and helpful and while there a group of 13 folks came in...and were seated, without fuss within minutes. Friendly, warm and cozy - and the food is excellent kept checking out what other folks were having and all the portions were huge!
Hello 'Sweeties', that being what our server called us from start to end. My wife and I had the lobster dinner. It was well-prepared and presented. But you can get that at practically any seafood restaurant. What made our meal special was the lemon meringue pie. A good two and a half inches of meringue atop and inch of lemon filling. Outstanding! While our service was excellent, around us diners were suffering dropped cutlery, food served not quite hot enough, etc. The thing is, nobody seemed to mind, almost as if the food was soooo good, they were willing to sacrifice a bit of fumbling service for it. We sat in the room on the right side and before the night was out we had met the two other couples dining there and we compared notes as if it were a spontaneous dinner party. I'd go back to Velma's in a second.
The best cod tongues on the east coast!
We had 3 of our friends from Ottawa in & we recommended Velma's for Lunch as we have been there numerous times before & all was Great,,,Good Food,,,However this time we arrived at about 2pm from a visit at Signal Hill,,we were met by Velma herself & we needed a table for 5,,,Velma said Nothing Doing,,,this is our busy time & I'm not going to put 2 tables together,,,We were all appalled!!!!The Owner saying this to her Customers,,,Anyways we did stay as we were tired & hungary & the food was good once we received it.***Velma you can't treat your Customers like that!!!
